Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

At Back Bay Family Dentistry, we understand some people may experience anxiety before and during their dental appointment. We are happy to provide sedation dentistry using nitrous oxide if you feel this would help with your appointment.

Nitrous Oxide has been used in sedation dentistry for many years. It is a sweet-smelling, colorless gas that you can breathe without irritation. You receive 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide during your treatment. There are many benefits to using nitrous oxide sedation dentistry:

  • Effective for mild to moderate dental anxiety
  • Effects noticed rapidly
  • Can be used for any length of treatment
  • You can drive yourself to your appointment and return to normal activities immediately
  • The level of sedation can be altered at anytime
  • There is no hangover effect
  • It is safe for most patients with no side effects to lungs, heart or breathing
  • It is effective in minimizing gagging during dental procedures

Nitrous oxide sedation dentistry is not recommended for patients who experience respiratory problems such as asthma or COPD. It is also not recommended for women in their first trimester of pregnancy.
